Tribute to my television at home—first death anniversary

Television set, a day to day refreshment item has become part of our life and a greatest credit to human invention. The difference between a human and Television is that we develop our knowledge by watching it over the years but in turn the age of the television degrades.

Me and ma TV..

I was hardly half past 3 when my father brought the branded “Dyanora” TV to home. It was a perfect fit for the Television to sit on a show case rack which was designed specifically for such a large TV. In 80’s “Dyanora” was one of the popular Television sets.

It was none other than our Doordharshan Channel used to dominate and was ruling India for many years. Emotions were recollected when we were watching Indira Gandhi’s assassination clips played seamlessly in the next few days itself.

There was definite curiosity for all of our family members to watch the Tamil channels. Those unforgettable moments of watching “Oliyum Oziyum” on every Friday’s at 7:00 P.M will make our whole family to assemble in front of that screen. Getting a Jackpot was so meager and comes once in a while when a newly released tamil song being played in that week. Sometimes I had applauded too!!!

My bro used to be a die-hard fan of Jackie Chan movies never misses watching reviews. He eyes-on watching English movies which were mostly played in late nights that my father will never get his sleep till the TV goes into a shutdown mode.

National news never used to be biased for any political ruling party.

The box had just 12 channels with press button switches on a small panel on to the left side without a remote control.

Illayaraja songs and mike “Mohan” movies were dominating for several years. Ironic national/state award winners fall in the Sunday matinee movie slots which seldom draw attention. At times our TV was also a show runner for some street festive occasions.

Days were fast forwarded to months and months rolled on to years and I became adult. Then V-channel and MTv was my favorites. I had the proud to show the TV to my friends saying “Hey it crossed more than 10 years and is still running”. My school days past and I graduated as Engineer.

As any typical Electrical Engineer, my interests grew and wanted to explore what was it inside the box. It was basically a transformer based power supply with more analog circuits on a big PCB.

The electronic box got exhausted with the torment which we had been giving for years that small repairs started coming up. I remember the volume control went off totally once. My mom could identify an ITI person holding a TV repair shop to work on all the future issues which came up as many washed off their hands saying “It is an old branded TV”.

We all felt the box was still having life and continue to run. Yes it ran for more than 25 years and that one day the screen went black when the power turned ON. It was so easy for me to replace a brand new LG flatscreen for that legendary machine which had been with me as a long time friend irrespective of all of my happy and sad moments through my entire life.

Needless to complain about a typical chettiar community, my mom sold that box for the same ITI repairer for 500 bucks. I now feel that I could have preserved that electronic item in one corner of the house as a remembrance…..Once it was occupying a majestic position in our hall but I don’t know its current status as whether electronics were ripped off or and has gone to garbage….
