Wakeup call for Indian Govt

February 21, 2011 2 comments

I recently read an article that the Indian Govt likes to add more feathers in its cap by buying few more F-16s from the United States. There is no doubt that US is trying to exhibit its super power skills thereby making business in such multi billion $ deals. As India is scaling heights in different areas of technology, when it comes to defense and aerospace, US and Europe claim that we are still 2 to 3 decades behind them. Apparently India is still using the stealth aircrafts and technology what we had acquired from Russia and some more which is planned to acquire from US (for its MMRCA program).

We should not be surprised to hear that we have been using the same stealth technology for nearly two decades and have not come with our own aircraft, worst come not even a commercial aircraft; from the domain knowledge what we gained from Russia. [India had made an 9 seater aircraft and is used for Governmental purpose]

Presently all the key OEMs like Airbus, Boeing, Lockheed Martin etc are now eying on China for it to come out with their 100 seater aircrafts which will be ready to fly in the skies soon.

What are we doing?

Are we going to sit and awe at Chinese airplanes?

Or the Govt takes weird measures to deploy those airplanes in India and applaud seeing “Made in China” embossed on it.

I felt so infuriated to read that India did show a promise to start a project called SARAS but was soon dropped citing technical problems. This happened in 2008. It has been more than 2 years and now NAL (National Aerospace Laboratories) has given an open statement that India will start making its own civil aircrafts which will be a 90-100 seater with a 2500 km flying range during an interview at the Aero India (South Asia’s largest air show ) held in Bangalore,. It also said that the Govt is looking for public and potential private investment (of course from airliners) to this project. There is something more funny when I read “The domain experts are in short supply” for this program.

Should these questions arise after we have worked for more than 20 years in aerospace domain?

What is the expertise we got after working in the field for so long?

I paid a visit to the Air Show this year; the acclaimed part was that India did show cased most of its “Purchased” fighter planes.

It is high time that India should take a wakeup call to commence its design and get clearance to move into production for the 90 seater segment for which there is tremendous growth. By the time when it comes out, we will be anyway lagging behind our Chinese counterparts by a decade!!

If this is the case for a commercial aircraft, think about when are we venturing into home grown fighter jets??

I would like to recollect the old poem here but for our Indian Govt to read

“The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep”
